“Oh, help me in my weakness!”

I heard the drifter say
Я слышал, кричал босяк,
As they carried him from the courtroom
Когда его выводили из зала суда
And were taking him away.
И высылали прочь.
“My trip hasn’t been a pleasant one,
«Мой путь был не из приятных,
And my time it isn’t long,
И времени почти нет,
And I still do not know
А я до сих пор не понимаю,
What it was that I’ve done wrong!”
В чём же я нагрешил».
Well, the judge, he cast his robe aside,
Судья скинул мантию,
A tear came to his eye,
На глазах блеснула слеза:
“You fail to understand,” he said,
«Ты даже не понимаешь, — сказал он. —
“Why must you even try?”
Так к чему и пытаться?»
Outside, the crowd was stirring,
На улице волновалась толпа,
You could hear it from the door,
Это было слышно у двери,
Inside, the judge was stepping down
А внутри уступал судья,
While the jury cried for more.
Когда присяжные требовали строгости.
“Oh, stop that cursed jury!”
«Остановите это проклятое жюри! —
Cried the attendant and the nurse,
Вскричали служитель и сиделка. —
“The trial was bad enough
Разбирательство было подлым,
But this is ten times worse!”
Но это в десять раз хуже!»
Just then a bolt of lightning
И вдруг молния с неба
Struck the courthouse out of shape,
Поразила судейский дом,
And while ev’rybody knelt to pray,
И, пока все пали на колени,
The drifter did escape.
Босяк сумел сбежать.
