From Wilderland to Western shore,

And darkling woods he walked at will.
И темные леса шел он один.
With Dwarves and Hobbits, Elves and Men,
С гномами и хоббитами, эльфами и людьми,
With mortal and immortal folk,
С бессмертными и смертными людьми,
With bird on bough and beast in den,
С птицами и зверями
In their own secret tongues he spoke.
Говорил он на их тайном языке.
A deadly sword, a healing hand,
Смертельный клинок и рука, что исцелит,
A back that bent beneath its load;
Сгибал он под тяжестью спину,
A trumpet-voice, a burning brand,
Громок голос его, пылающий факел в руке,
A weary pilgrim on the road.
Усталый странник в пути.
A lord of wisdom throned he sat,
Он мудр был,
Swift in anger, quick to laugh;
Ужасен в гневе, в веселье равных ему нет,
An old man in a battered hat
Старик в потертой шляпе,
Who leaned upon a thorny staff.
